A Bad Mingled Wryness - February 4, 2009

Yes, I am a facebooker.  It’s fun, and mildly addictive.  OK, perhaps a little more than addictive.  One of the most recent phenomenons on facebook is “25 Random Things”, you might have read about it in USA Today this week, or worse yet, you might have been “tagged”.

So, in the spirit of openness, and since this is Wednesday, here is my list.  It has nothing to do with H.R., management, or business strategy.

25 Random Things

1) I do not know what I do not know… and that frustrates the heck out of me.
2) The last three years have taught me something: You can’t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future.
3) It’s been nearly 10 years since I hiked the Inca Trail to Maccu Picchu. 26 miles in four days.
4) When my lovely bride realized that I would be running my business from home, she moved her studio out of our garage and bought me a dog.
5) I met Batman and Mary Ann, they were in a show with my dad (yes, that Mary Ann, is there any other?)
6) My outlook on the role of “family” is heavily influenced by Robert Heinlein, the dean of science fiction.
7) I love anchovies. Yea, salty hairy fish… and your point is what?
8) Yes, I call my wife my “lovely bride”. It’s a wonderful habit. When I look at her, I see her as I did nearly 24 years ago.
9) I’ve been to every state in the U.S. except two; Maine and Alaska. I’m trying to get Alaska in the “been to” group in 2009.
10) Even though I was a political science major in college, 2008 was the first time I voted… for anyone.
11) Those who can’t do, teach. Those that can’t teach write books. I’ve written three books.
12) My parents always told me that my reward for “making them crazy” when I was growing up would be having kids that were just like me. I am so glad they were right.
13) I love food shopping. No, seriously. The cutting of the coupons (which are placed in my coupon box in “Aisle Order”, not alphabetically). The five hour marathon shopping sessions. Irritating the poor people dumb enough to get behind me in line at Kroger. The fact that they have to do an over-ring because I used over 100 coupons. I even blog about it.
14) I am happiest on stage. It allows me to hide behind a persona. And, is there anything better than applause?
15) The best thing about getting your book published is the look of pride on your parents face. The second best thing about getting your book published is irritating your older brother… A Two-Fer!
16) I’ve only truly believed in God two times in my life, when I witnessed the birth of my older son and when I saw the sun rise above the canopy at Yacumama Lodge on the Yarapa River in Peru. Miracles and stunning beauty just don’t happen.
17) People ask me why I got married so young (I was 23). The answer? She said “yes”. Those of you that know me understand that all too well.
18) My brother used to torture me with the Spit Yo-yo. I continued the tradition with my boys. If you have a problem with that, watch Fiddler On The Roof, and you’ll understand the power of tradition.
19) I didn’t eat chocolate until I was nearly 10. I can’t tell you how jealous I was of my brother who got to drink Chocolate Quik while I had to drink Carob-milk…
20) I love wrestling. Not that wimpy roman-greco stuff, I’m talkin’ about wrastlin’. However, I don’t like to watch midget wrestling, it’s too fast and for some reason gets me nervous.
21) I am never late. The only thing I want to be late for is my own funeral.
22) I love to cook. I love to eat more than I love to cook. I hate to exercise more than I love to eat and cook. Bad bad combination.
23) I’ve only had three beers in my life. A Little Kings Creme Ale (7 ounce) when I was 17, a Dos Equus at a Club Med softball game in Mexico (either that or warm milk), and the third in Peru when one of the adults who went on the Maccu Picchu trip double-dog-dared me. I kept the label of the third one.
24) My friend Rob and I successfully pulled off “The Switch” in high school. If you are unsure what this means, watch the 97th episode of NBC sitcom Seinfeld.
25) I have very high standards but low expectations. Should that be the other way around?

HAVE A GREAT DAY!
