Making the Final Circuit?

a journey or route all the way around a particular place or area

I feel sympathy for the tens of thousands of current employees

I feel empathy for the shareholders who have seen the company’s stock price drop 85% in the last 12 months

I feel complete apathy for leadership

Yes, tough words, but what else can you say about the path Circuit City seems to be taking toward a true company demise?  Consider the following:

  • 2004 - New Executive VP is hired
  • 2004 - Buys Canadian electronics retailer and increases US expansion plans
  • 2005 - Company turns down $17/share offer for the company
  • 2006 - Big price drop of LCD TV’s, Circuit City’s bread and butter
  • 2007 - Company dismisses 4,000 of the highest paid, most tenured employees… and then invites them to re-apply for their job at a lower pay rate
  • 2008 - $321 million loss.  Stock price tanks again, down to $1.80 share. $1 billion credit line secured to keep the company solvent through 2008.

I never like to see a company go out of business…  in this case there are 35,000 families relying on the decisions of senior leadership so they can take care of their families.  Whether they stay in business, wind up closing half of their stores in order to get back to profitability, or wind up selling to another conglomerate at dirt cheap prices, life will go on…

Just not on this circuit anymore…
