A Bad Mingled Wryness - July 30, 2008
Wow. I’m delinquent Marc. I looked up the definition of that word and it works with me on so many levels. I also had an interesting lunch with a friend and colleague. Let’s call him Bob. It’s not really Bob, but we’ll call him that anyway. So, Bob and I were having lunch at a fabulous deli, and we were talking about my blog, my company (employee hold’em), my speeches, and my books. He asked me the dreaded Bob questions: How much money are you making from writing your blog? How many people are reading it? Do you get any business from it? Why are you doing it?”
Yea, like I needed those questions. And then… he called me… you ready?
Narcissistic. Ouch. That hurt. A little piece of me torn from my bones. A crack in my armor. A mortal wound.
And worse yet, I bought lunch!
Six Years Too Early
According to a recent study, college grads are enjoying a bountiful hiring season, with entry-level wages up about 7%. Even with unemployment rate currently at 5.5% and climbing, life is good if you have a college degree. Makes me wish we would have had kids earlier. Cudda-wudda-shudda.
LOL
An article in the Journal the other day talked about the college kids described above and their love of text messaging, even during the selection process. Really? I guess I am just old fashioned; thinking that correct spelling and grammar count for something, that being able to think and write in whole sentences is an indication of something-or-other. I guess it is more important to see how well the applicants opposable thumbs work on a four inch QWERTY keyboard, or how quickly they can hop to Facebook to watch the newest video positing.
I wonder what things will be like when my younger son gets out of college in 2013 or so. Well, I know things will be happy at the ‘ol homestead, but I do wonder what the job market will be like. I guess he’ll see soon enough.
Upcoming Speeches
I just booked another seminar at the FMI conference in Mid-September. The Food Marketing Institute is having their annual Human Resources/Training & Development conference in Monterey and have invited me to do a general session playing the Hold’em card game I created a couple of years back. I’m also going to include some of the Retail Industry data uncovered from the 2008-9 Employee Hold’em National Workforce Engagement Benchmark. In addition, I’ll be highlighting the some of the findings outlined in our upcoming book related to the adage Employees quit a boss, not a company.
It should be fun, and enlightening. And anytime I can take a drive from San Francisco to Monterey, life is good!
