The Health of Today’s Health Care Workers

Talk about feeling sick….

Only two thirds of health care workers Enjoy coming to work, the same percentage as in 2004. Three quarters have a strong relationship with their supervisor, feel their job provides a feeling of personal accomplishment, and believe there is a good fit between their skills and abilities and their job. Again, the same as in 2004.

Less than two thirds of all healthcare workers agree their company treats employees well while seven in ten believe their organization is a good corporate citizen, again no change in four years.

Finally, while seven in ten employees agree their organization is highly ethical, less than six in ten agree:

  • I feel valued as an employee
  • Differences between individuals are respected and valued
  • Company policies are carried out in a fair and just manner

No change in four years…

Remember, these are the fsame folks that we count on to take care of us, our children, our parents, and our friends. And it gets worse. According to a JAMA abstract (October 23, 2002), each additional patient per nurse was associated with a 7% increase in the likelihood of dying within 30 days of admission, and a 7% increase in the odds of “failure-to-rescue”. And according to a National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators study, for every increase of one hour in total nursing hours/patient day, fall rates (in hospitals) were 2% lower. For every increase of a year in the average RN experience, the fall rate was 1% lower.

How well off do you feel knowing 581,000 healthcare positions remained unfilled in January of 2008 and 694,000 open jobs in February.

If you were sick for four years without getting any better, would you think about finding a new healthcare practitioner? It looks as if healthcare workers are…
